In the spring of 2024, I traveled to Berlin for a trend hunt. The dynamic city offered a rich source of new trends in sustainability, urban development, and technology. Back in the Netherlands, I organized my findings on an evidence wall and identified four trend clusters: Detached Earth, Luminous Maze, Preserved Matter, and Bubble Gardens. These clusters reflected the current zeitgeist, characterized by sustainability, technological progress, and social awareness, but also by aspects of coexistence & lifestyle. Think of psychology, health, education, social
relations, social design, fashion, and leisure. This led to my research question: How do we deal with biodiversity in the city of the future? In this trend book, I investigate this question through in-depth analyses and case studies.
I highlight how cities worldwide integrate biodiversity and which best practices we can follow. This book serves as a guide for designing cities that put biodiversity at the heart of urban development and improve the well-being of its inhabitants.
